ChemMatters: How NASA Keeps Tabs On Air Pollution
NASA’s Aura satellite can detect global air pollution levels from space by understanding the changing chemistry of the Earth’s atmosphere. This satellite can measure air quality, across the entire planet, in just 24 hours.

Aura, in some sense, is a sophisticated camera that operates in various wavelength ranges in order to see the spectrum. Aura's instruments makes a global picture of ozone and other gases using spectrometers. The Aura satellite was built to specifically study the ozone depletion problem.
