At one time there were problems with CFC's (chlorofluorocarbons) from aerosols, and PCB's (polychlorinatedbiphenyls). Both compound are presently being used significantly less than they were. The problem is the chlorine molecules are detached from the parent molecule via the sun allowing the chlorine to be free to react with the ozone to produce oxygen. The chlorine acts as a catalyst meaning it helps to speed up the reaction without being consumed in the reaction. Thus, chlorine attacks ozone producing oxygen and chlorine. This chlorine is free to react over and over again with the ozone. We must try to find a way to remove this chlorine. I knew of this problem in the early 1990's when I was studying chemistry at the post secondary level. At that time there was a hole in the ozone the size of the U.S. I wonder how big it is now almost 20 yrs later?

In addition to aerosols, lest we forget that in the early days refridgerant found in household fridges and freezers and vehicle air conditioners also contained CFC's!

Thanks Tibor you provided some good information some of which i did not know, guess we learn some thing ever day.

Tibor is correct, CFC'S are a huge contributor to pollution of our atmosphere they came from many different sources and although we are using far less of these products that contain CFC'S and PCB'S we are aware that the chlorine is going to be the real issue for as Tibor said it reacts over and over until the ozone is depleted.

Nice post!
