There have been four major paradigm shifts in consumer technology during the last 3 decades. In the 1980s, Apple and Microsoft kicked off their epic rivalry, bringing on the PC revolution. In the 1990s, the Dot Com boom saw the Internet become a part of our daily lives. In the late 2000s, our daily lives became a part of the Internet with the rise of social networks. The fourth, however, has outdone them all in growth - the Internet going mobile with smartphones.

According to Flurry Analytics, there are now 640 million devices running iOS and Android apps after June - July 2012 huge growth in developing nations. The growth numbers by nation are below.

China: 401%
Chile: 279%
Brazil: 220%
Argentina: 217%
Iran: 196%
Vietnam: 193%
Mexico: 194%
Russia: 189%
Turkey: 185%
India: 171%

This huge growth is 10 times greater than the growth of PC usage in the 1980s, the Internet in the 1990s and the social networks today and that's just iOS and Android. Blackberry has seen better times, but still has its share of the market, while Windows Phone is sure to start catching up to iOS and Android after Windows 8 launches.
