A flying car has been one of Mankind's greatest fantasies pretty much ever since human flight was proven possible. Now, after numerous engineering challenges, especially the often conflicting demands of the Federal Aviation Authority and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, Terrafugia have finally presented their flying car, the Transition, at the New York International Auto Show.

Even though this concept began life as a plane, the Transition can both drive and fly using fuel from a conventional gas pump. It's also equipped with a rear-facing camera to help with backing up. The beauty of it is the vehicle is so light and small that it only requires 20 hours of pilot training to legally operate. 20 hours is certainly worth the potential benefits of a car that's just as good in the air as it is on the road. The current going rate for a Transition is a mere $280000.

It may be a while before flying cars are commonplace, but this is definitely a start. People who put in orders include farmers who need to cover a lot of ground in a period of time, as well as real estate agents who would benefit from a bird's eye view of the surroundings. As the technology gets cheaper, we should see more and more of these in the skies. One certainly has to hope for a VOTL variant  that would be more urban-friendly.
