After a mammoth thigh bone with well-preserved bone marrow has been found in Siberia, Russian and Japanese scientists believe they are now able to clone one of the beasts, bringing a species that has been extinct for 10 000 years back to life.

The process of cloning a mammoth would involve extracting DNA from elephants, mixing it in with the mammoth DNA extracted from the thigh bone found in Siberia and then implanting the result into an elephant womb for delivery. Mammoths and elephants are obviously close relatives and share very similar DNA, making the use of elephant DNA to help clone a mammoth possible.

The biggest problem so far has been obtaining a mammoth DNA sample of a good enough quality. This may very well be changed with this recent discovery. Global warming is to thank for this - frozen ground in Eastern Russia is starting to thaw, leading to a lot of mammoth remains being unearthed.
