Osama Bin Laden Has Been Killed

US officials have confirmed today (May 1st 2011) that Osama bin Laden has been killed and his body has been recovered by U.S. authorities.

President Barack Obama is due to make an announcement shortly on this breaking news. The United States has been searching in vain for bin Laden since he disappeared in Afghanistan in late 2001.

In the words of Reuters, "It is a major accomplishment for Obama and his national security team, having fulfilled the goal once voiced by Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush, to bring to justice the mastermind of the September 11, 2001, attacks."

UPDATE (May 1st - 11:16pm EST):
We have received confirmation from CNN that Osama Bin Laden was infact killed but we are awaiting details on his death. He was found and killed at a mansion outside of Islamabad, Pakistan.

UPDATE (May 1st - 11:43pm EST):
President Obama is actively addressing the world in a televised address.

A special ops raid, [perhaps Delta Force as part of Operation Enduring Freedom], infiltrated a Pakistani compound housing Bin Laden. After a prolonged firefight Osama Bin Laden has been confirmed killed and his body has been recovered.

This raid was performed after a prolonged investigation into this lead, and the planning for this assault was done in cooperation with the Pakistani government.
