It is indeed a brilliant show of light when the Van Allen belts discharge into the atmosphere. The molecules in the air actually undergo excitation causing them to emit light, or glow. Posted by KaylaF on February 21, 2011 at 10:25 pm
It was a great show but the effects of the solar flares are frustrating. The sun might be ninety three million miles away, however when it has a bad day, Earth feels it.
