It is indeed a brilliant show of light when the Van Allen belts discharge into the atmosphere. The molecules in the air actually undergo excitation causing them to emit light, or glow.

It was a great show but the effects of the solar flares are frustrating. The sun might be ninety three million miles away, however when it has a bad day, Earth feels it. OK I looked. If it has a bad day. Don't always believe what you read. Where is the proof that things went terribly wrong?
